Easter in Tripoli – Greek fragrance

Easter in Tripoli is indeed an enormous festival. Holy week inspires devotion, with devout fasting and church services that leave you shaking. On Good Friday all the epitaphs are joined in a river of faith in front of the imposing Cathedral of Basil the Great.

From the time of the Resurrection and afterwards the whole city joins in celebration.  That’s when the party starts. Fireworks light up the sky. The Municipality of Tripoli has a long noble tradition, which will always be continued. On Easter Sunday all the ‘good things from God’ are offered free to locals and travellers. Choice roasts, eggs, sweet Easter bread and wine are available all over the city, from the square of St Basil to Areos square. Everyone becomes part of one massive company of friends. The children of course have a field day. Traditional dancing and singing give a Greek fragrance to this Easter day. For anyone who has done it, Easter in Tripoli really is an unforgettable experience. Those travellers who make a point of being here every year to feel the Easter atmosphere and the genuine Arcadian ways, are not few in number.
